B+

The fascinating life of legendary jazz and blues singer turned civil rights activist Nina Simone is documented in a series of never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with friends, family and Simone herself. Although it lacks the breadth of material packed into fellow Oscar Best Documentary nominee and winner “Amy,” it is still an extremely well done film that helps explain why Simone turned her back on the music industry at the height of her career.
