The Reel Review
Strong performances by Sophie Nélisse as young Liesel and Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson as her adoptive parents give wings to this otherwise slightly corny adaptation of Marcus Zusak’s popular young adult novel about a family that puts themselves in danger when they secretly shelter a young jew from the Nazis in World War II Germany.
Its message, about the triumph of the human spirit, while not new, is one that always bears repeating, especially in this case, as told from this viewpoint of a child. And while the unusual narration by the grim reaper at the start of the film seems contrived, it results in a powerful ending that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Well done.
