The Reel Review

A flurry of big names – Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Chris Pine – star in this well-intentioned, family friendly Disney adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 science fantasy novel about children traveling in time to find their scientist father who goes missing after discovering a new planet. Director Ava DuVernay (Selma, 13th) gives us a big, bloated, pretentious effort – a tediously slow film more preoccupied with costuming, trippy special effects and creating a larger than life Oprah (literally, her character is, at times, a giant) than with giving this heartfelt but complex story a real voice. A giant disappointment.
