The Reel Review

D+

Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland star in this adaptation of Michael Zadoorian’s 2009 novel about an aging couple, one in the final stages of cancer, the other with Alzheimer’s Disease, setting out from Massachusetts to Key West in their vintage RV for what will likely be the final vacation of their lives. Writer/Director Paolo Virzi squanders two acting powerhouses and what could easily have been an emotionally stirring, insightful and heartfelt story of love and death, on a maddeningly trite story filled with unlikely, cheap laughs and one missed opportunity after another. The only sweet part of this film – the periodic nighttime slideshows outside their RV, featuring photos from the earlier years of their lives together.
