The Reel Review
Over the course of his illustrious career, filmmaker James L. Brooks has brought us such relationship-oriented classics as Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News and Jerry Maguire. His latest, from writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig, stars Hailee Steinfeld as a wonderfully awkward teenager making the transition from child to young woman, while coping with the death of her father and losing her best friend when the friend starts dating her older brother. The film’s realistic tone and modern day message is much darker than the cutesy trailer implies, but as a result, it yields a much more emotionally rewarding experience. Steinfeld is exceptional, boosted by an equally strong supporting cast. Well done, Mr. Brooks and Ms. Craig.
