The Reel Review

B

Australian outback drama takes center stage in this odd, dark comedy directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, half of the duo responsible for the 1995 mega-hit Muriel’s Wedding. The film stars Kate Winslet as a Parisian haute couture designer who returns to her tiny outback town to reunite with her estranged mom (Judy Davis), rekindle a romance with her beau (Liam Hemsworth) and use fashion to exact revenge on the residents who forced her to leave town as a child following the death of a school classmate. The premise is wonderfully bizarre, and its all-star cast is excellent, but its TV novella-inspired vibe has the scattered plot racing a bit all over the place. The gowns, however, are stunning.
