The Reel Review
After her reality TV show is cancelled, a television producer returns to her hometown to contemplate her life. When she discovers her former boyfriend is about to marry a girl who possesses the qualities she used to have, she sets her sights on winning him back, in this rom-com starring Alison Brie and Jay Ellis (Escape Room, Top Gun: Maverick).
The screenplay, from Brie and director/husband Dave Franco, is a pretty blatant ripoff of My Best Friend’s Wedding (it even gets name checked halfway into the film). Despite not being all that original, it is a serviceable rom-com about past regrets and following your instincts. Kiersey Clemons (Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Hearts Beat Loud) plays the fiancée with Julie Hagerty as our protagonist’s mom and Danny Pudi (Community) as her good friend.
Brie and Franco do attempt to inject some subversive humor into the story – sometimes it connects, other times it’s a miss. It is, at least, grounded in some introspective reality, making the rom-com at least slightly above average.
