The Reel Review
When four teenage girls in a small town in Massachusetts start researching the spooky faceless internet urban legend the “Slender Man” (apparently some demonic taker of children in the woods?), they watch a video (reminiscent of 2002’s The Ring) which summons him into their world. Then they decide to head to the forest! A lot!
There have been several of these types of movies over the years (the most recent, 2017’s dreadfully bad Bye Bye Man), and this one actually starts off well enough with plenty of creepy visuals, a good score and decent performances from its four stars. But strangely enough, we never learn what the Slender Man is, or even the fate of some of the main characters in the film. The PG-13 rating, the gaping plot holes, and the graphic scenes in the film trailer that are COMPLETELY MISSING from the final film indicate there was a whole lot of editing going on before this film’s release, which is likely why we are left with a pointless, unexplained second act that limps to a bland, unscary finale.
