The Reel Review
In this timely sequel to 2015’s Sicario, the drug war along the U.S. -Mexico border has escalated as Mexican drug cartels have started trafficking terrorists across the U.S. border. To fight back, Graver (Josh Brolin) and Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) reunite with a scheme to foment discord among the cartels and keep America safe. Writer Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Hell or High Water, Wind River) delivers another intense, pulse-pounding thriller, and while a tad shy of the strength of Sicario (we miss Emily Blunt!), this gritty tale still stands strongly on its own merit, aided by strong, fast-paced direction from Stefano Sollima and intense performances by Brolin, Del Toro and Isabela Moner (Transformers: The Last Knight) as the drug cartel leader’s mouthy daughter. A variation of the same hypnotic, haunting score and stark cinematography from the original film also helps set a grim, disturbing portrait of life along the border. Well done.
