The Reel Review
When Russian prima ballerina Dominika (Jennifer Lawrence) sustains a career-ending leg injury, her spymaster uncle signs her up for Sparrow school, where the more attractive Russian spies learn the art of seduction, or as Dominika calls it, whore school. From there, she is sent to seduce a CIA agent (Joel Edgerton) to learn the identity of a mole within the Russian government.
Despite solid acting performances, this entertaining but predictable spy thriller offers little new ground for the genre and suffers from stereotypical, one dimensional characters and slow, uneven pacing. Francis Lawrence, who directed JLaw in the Hunger Games sequels, delivers way more believable action scenes (there’s an exceptionally graphic one in particular) than those where dialogue is required.
