The Reel Review

A

Not having seen the hokey 1977 original (which I heard was just meh), I went into this Disney remake, about an orphan raised by a dragon in the forest, with little to no expectations. After a slow first few minutes which had me wondering if this film even had a plot, I was suddenly waylaid by a sweet, gentle tale that allowed its actors to tell the story about the importance of family (Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford and those adorable kids – Oakes Fegley and Oona Laurence – are amazing), underscored by Disney’s now-expected array of outstanding visual effects, and enough tear-jerking moments to reduce grown men (like me) into a heaving, sobbing mess. This is one of the best kids movies of the summer that adults will also just happen to adore. It is magical.
