The Reel Review
On the heels of his thought provoking films Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, director Darren Aronofsky has given us his most over the top, highly-divisive film yet – a symbolism-laden, maddening Biblical allegory starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem. This is not the entertaining Rosemary’s Baby-esque horror flick teased in the trailer, but rather, a surreal art house indictment of God and humanity meant to induce a visceral reaction from moviegoers, which it does in spades. Lawrence and Bardem’s performances are good – unfortunately Aronofsky’s chaotic vision (perhaps itself meant to represent our current chaotic world) is tediously long and so focused on shock value that it clouds his message. But the film will make you think.
