The Reel Review

B+

Jessica Chastain stars in this biopic of Molly Bloom, the former U.S. freestyle skier who made millions hosting high stakes underground poker matches attended by movie stars, CEOs, pro athletes, billionaires, and later, and apparently unbeknownst to her until her arrest in 2013, the Russian mob. In his movie directing debut, Aaron Sorkin showcases the same clever, rapid-fire dialogue and fast-paced storytelling that scored him an Oscar for The Social Network and multiple Emmys for The West Wing. That, along with brilliant performances from Chastain as the sassy poker princess who refused to “name names” to strike a plea deal, and from Idris Elba and Kevin Costner, makes for an interesting and entertaining glimpse inside the fast world of high stakes poker.
