The Reel Review
A multi-national crew onboard the International Space Station retrieves a spacecraft from Mars – reviving a long dormant life form that starts growing and picking them off one by one. Sound familiar? Although this story has been done before, this pulse-pounding sci-fi hybrid of Alien and Gravity, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, differs from others in the genre by capturing the claustrophobia of space travel and showcasing ultra-realistic visual effects and a believable monster. Where it falls short is its unbelievable comic stunt-casting of wisecracking Reynolds, cheesy dialogue and an eye-rolling ending that betrays what otherwise is a very taut, terrifying thriller.
