The Reel Review

A+

An aspiring actress and a jazz pianist navigate their feelings for one another with their dreams of success in this very contemporary love story set in Los Angeles and adorned with the look and feel of the antiquated, sparkling musicals of the 1940s and 50s. A couple of out-of-place moments aside, Damien Chazelle’s film is pure cinematic gold – a love letter to life’s dreamers – with emotional, raw performances of a lifetime by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, a haunting score that will linger in your mind long after you leave the theater, and a gut wrenching wallop of an ending that will leave a huge lump in your throat. The beautiful story, about the bittersweet emotions of life paths not taken, will be a classic.
