The Reel Review

C+

Three years after giant insect-like creatures emerged from sinkholes and killed 95% of humanity, survivors in the Rocky Mountains live in scattered communities more than 8000 feet above sea level, at an elevation the creatures can’t withstand. But when his son’s health deteriorates, a single father and two others must journey below that elevation to obtain life-saving medical equipment. Anthony Mackie, Morena Baccarin (Deadpool) and Maddie Hasson (Malignant, The Finder) star in this post-apocalyptic sci-fi/action thriller.

Under the direction of George Nolfi (The Banker, The Adjustment Bureau), Elevation has all the hallmarks of a bland, low budget knockoff of A Quiet Place. Its cast does the best they can, but just can’t elevate (see what we did there?) the film’s feeble screenplay and lack of character development.

From Elevation

At its heart, Elevation is a more of a video game-type shoot-’em-up action/thriller, with decent albeit sparingly used CGI. The cinematography of the Colorado mountains is gorgeous, creating a certain surreal vibe when juxtaposed with the horrifying looking creatures. With a runtime of an hour and a half, Elevation is serviceable enough and at least knows better than to overstay its welcome.

REEL FACTS
