The Reel Review
Martin Freeman (The Hobbit trilogy) stars in this Netflix original post-apocalyptic horror film about a father on an Iliad-type journey across the Australian outback, trying to find a safe refuge for his infant daughter during a viral pandemic. The film is light on the more expected zombie gore of the genre, instead opting to focus on a more character-driven, psychological story, even veering off into some pretty surreal, artsy territory with its overriding Aboriginal themes. Despite working with a story scant on detail that often strains the bounds of believability, Freeman singlehandedly does a terrific job of conveying the quiet desperation of a man creating a new family to ensure a future for his child. As zombie movies go, the creativity and solid acting by the ensemble cast brings something new to this done-to-death genre – making it worth seeing.
