The Reel Review

A

Saoirse Ronan steals the hearts of moviegoers as an Irish immigrant striking out for a better life in America in this terrific 1950s coming of age period piece. The incredible imagery of Ellis Island aside, the film really brings home all the feelings we experience when leaving home for the first time – the initial homesickness and uncertainty, and eventually, the self-confidence and joy of self reliance. It’s also a wonderful testament to the types of movies that used to be so prevalent – films that focused on simple, solid storytelling and emotionally compelling characters. Expect to see Ronan on the short list of Best Actress nominees come Oscar season.
