The Reel Review
When her marriage to a wealthy, corrupt New York businessman (Alec Baldwin) collapses, socialite Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) is forced to move in with her working class sister (Sally Hawkins) in her apartment in San Francisco, wreaking havoc on the lives of everyone around her. This is one of director/writer Woody Allen’s better dark comedies, elevated by Cate Blanchett’s jaw dropping, Oscar-winning portrait of a self-centered, loathsome egomaniac who’s quick to offer unsolicited advice to others, while remaining woefully self-unaware about just how bad her advice is. The film will make you feel like a very uncomfortable yet enthralled fly on the wall, as this emotional hurricane of an individual leaves a path of destruction in her wake. Well done, Cate.
