The Reel Review
This is the jaw-dropping true story of the 1973 kidnapping of the grandson of oil billionaire J. Paul Getty, at that time, the world’s wealthiest individual. Weaving together a well-crafted screenplay with a meticulous attention to visual detail, director Ridley Scott transports us to that era, turning a fairly straightforward crime drama into a riveting nail biter. Michelle Williams, as Getty’s former daughter-in-law and mother of the kidnapped boy, is mesmerizing, and Christopher Plummer, who replaced Kevin Spacey during a now-famous, nine day reshoot after Spacey was fired due to alleged sexual misconduct, delivers such an outstanding, iconic portrait of the cold hearted, greed-obsessed cheapskate, it is impossible to imagine anyone else in this role.
