The Reel Review
Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin star is this true story about Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp, who, three weeks after setting sail from Tahiti to San Diego in late 1983, ended up in one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. Knocked unconscious from the storm, Tami awakens initially to a missing fiancée and a badly-damaged boat, and ultimately must decide whether to attempt an odds-defying, life-saving diversion to reach Hawaii – a jaw dropping, 1500 mile, 41 day journey. Through clever use of flashbacks and subtle dialogue, director Baltasar Kormákur (Everest) meticulously turns what could have been a straightforward tale of survival into a heart-wrenching and harrowing story, aided by exceptionally powerful and believable performances from Woodley and Claflin. This is one movie best viewed WITHOUT knowing the story beforehand. No Wikipedia! You will be very glad you did. It is exceptional and the end credits will choke you up.
