It’s no surprise that this story starring Dennis Quaid, about a repeatedly reincarnated dog bringing joy to lonely souls, is ridiculously simplistic and emotionally manipulative. But what is a surprise is some of the uncharacteristically sad lives and deaths our furry star endures in the film. But the predictably sweet tearjerker ending is a crowd pleaser, and its message, reminding us of the wonderful purpose pets play in our lives – teaching us about life, unconditional love and death – earns it a B.
