The Reel Review

Season 2 of the spinoff series from HBO’s iconic Sex and the City has the remaining three lifelong friends (and several new ones) navigating love, sex and relationships in New York City, capped with a finalé that includes a long-anticipated (albeit brief) appearance by Kim Cattrall as Samantha. In this season, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) reunites with former boyfriend Aiden (John Corbett), as Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Che (Sarah Ramirez) navigate turbulent relationship waters and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) finds new independence returning to work.

While Parker remains the glue holding the friendships (and series) together, it is Davis who has enjoyed the most character growth this season, stepping outside Charlotte’s more expected good girl image to show spunk and sexual awareness. Sarita Choudhury also settles more comfortably into the gleefully single, Samantha role, with the Miranda-Che relationship remaining tedious and frustrating to endure and, with the exception of Mario Cantone as Anthony, most of the other characters getting relatively little airtime.

After a sometimes wobbly Season 1 that initially tried way too hard to be politically correct with a cavalcade of racial and sexual representation, Season 2 settles into more meaningful storytelling despite still having too many characters. Some of the story arcs even manage to reveal glimpses of what made Sex and the City such an edgy, groundbreaking series. While still not as great as the original series, Season 2, and the finale in particular, are a nice reunion for SATC fans.

• HBO just renewed And Just Like That for Season 3

• Kim Cattrall filmed her Season 2 cameo on March 22nd in New York City, dressed by her Sex and the City costume designer Patricia Field, who had not been part of the And Just Like That series. No word whether Cattrall will take part in Season 3.

• As of 2023, 11 cast members have appeared in the original series, the movies, and the follow-up series: the four leads, Chris Noth, David Eigenberg, Willie Garson, Evan Handler, Mario Cantone and Julie Halston.
