The Reel Review

B+

Kristoffer Joner and Ane Dahl Torp star in Norway’s first major disaster film, about a rock avalanche that causes a massive, fast-moving tsunami through the deep fjord leading to the picturesque tourist haven of Geiranger.

Silje Breivik and Kristoffer Joner in The Wave.

And while this film has all the cliches and CGI special effects of a Hollywood blockbuster, this Scandinavian saga features much better acting and a much more believable plot, since deadly rockslide tsunamis have actually happened several times in Norway in the past century, killing dozens of people.

The set up to the big wave is just enough to heighten the suspense and make you care about the characters as they navigate a plot that borrows from The Poseidon Adventure and The Impossible. Well done.
